How Good Is God? 14 Jan 01
Key verse Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for the good of to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.

Most everyone is aware of the apostle Paul’s assertion of God’s goodness revealed in Romans 8, verse 28, which reads “And we know that in all things work for the good”. What if we challenged Paul’s premise? How can we reasonably reconcile Paul’s statement of goodness with the “facts of life”? Is God good when a loved-one dies unexpectedly? Is God good when a trusted teacher or child- care provider molests your child? Is God good when you lose your ability to walk, or lose your job, or lose your spouse to someone else? When all Hell breaks loose in your life do you still say God is good? How can Paul justify his position?
Well Paul asserts “And we know”. This says that the Christian has a level of faith that endures no matter the circumstances, or the trials. We know that God will prevail, that He will never leave us nor forsake us. We know that His love affords us a peace that surpasses all understanding (see proverbs 3:5-7). And we know, that Paul had a testimony, which validates his faith in God. Paul in 2 Cor 11:25 spoke of his trials, his physical pain and suffering, but through it all he preached “Count It all Joy! Why because All things work together for the good of those who love him. Paul asserts that we will have some trouble in our life, yet he still characterizes God as good. When we experience hard times we would do well to move closer to God and trust that He has our best interests in mind. We as Christians must ask ourselves do we love him. How much time and resources do we spend in fellowship with God? Do we spend our time busy with matters that exclude or anger God? Simply put, here are some things to consider when your life seems to be falling apart and you begin to question God’s goodness.

(1) Acknowledge that its not about you…its about the Lord – Actively resolve that not your will but His will be done…actively seek ye first the kingdom of God and allow God to direct your path
(2) Its about the Lord: God’s providence asserts the idea that His will shall be done (we must be faithful and go along for the ride – allow God to drive)
(3) God can make it happen if you love Him. – Don’t be ashamed to praise Him. If you love Him, then giving is not a problem, loving your neighbor is not a problem, walking in your calling is not a problem

Where are you when things seem to be falling apart? Do you find yourself drawing closer or farther away from God? Joseph in Genesis chapter 50, acknowledged God when he could have sought vengeance. Joseph knew vengeance was the Lords. Joseph knew this despite being wrongly enslaved by his brothers, wrongly accused by his masters’ wife, and wrongly imprisoned. God turned that which man meant for evil into good. We serve a good God. One who is good all the time!

"Eyes Wide Shut" - 7 Jan 01
Open Your Spiritual Eyes Wide Shut

Scripture: 2 Kings 8-16 key Verse V16-17a…. "Don't be afraid!" Elisha told him. "For there are more on our side than on theirs!" 17 Then Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!"…

Elisha is providing comfort to the servant in the midst of war. Exhorting him to see beyond his situation. Because Elisha knew that if God be for you, who can stand against you!

All of us have levels of sight (1) Physical or retinal sight: this is the most common sight where we focus/visualize the physical world with our eyes (2) second is Mental sight: is the capability to grasp a difficult concept – we see the world with our minds…often expressed by saying ..Oh, Now I See! Third (3) we have Spiritual sight: The highest level of sight afforded the Christian. This level allows the Christian the ability to see past his trials and tribulations and see instead the victory, to experience God's peace which surpasseth all understanding.

Pastor Brown challenged us all to no longer depend on living a life with our eyes wide shut. We must stop seeing with only our natural physical eyes. Instead we must aspire to be like Elisha, unafraid to “see” beyond the enemy perched upon the hill. Surrounded by enemies from all sides, Elisha prayed unto God so that others might also see with spiritual eyes. You see my brothers and sisters we like Elisha have a responsibility to tell somebody about the good news of Jesus Christ. You see, through spiritual eyes we can be like Elisha and tell others that God can turn victims into victory, racism into resilience, trouble into triumph! It is through spiritual eyes that our black forefathers gathered enough courage to outlast the slave owner’s whip; it is through spiritual eyes that the child born to drug addict parents in poverty can ascend to college and become a positive contributor to society. Jesus Christ is the truth and the light, which opens our eyes wide. Without spiritual eyes we tend to resort to “Buzzard Vision” a kind of one dimensional vision focused on picking at the dead carcass of life!. Dr. Brown warned that folks with buzzard vision never see the opportunity to spread the gospel; they never see the tithe but focus instead on “their money”. Buzzard vision rationalizes away the need for bible school attendance by choosing instead to watch TV at home. Buzzard vision talks down the ministry, props themselves up and focus on all things negative. Lord have mercy! Folks with buzzard vision can be remedied, they can become like Elisha who exemplified spiritual vision by (1) providing /receiving reassurance/encouragement (2) allowing God to deliver us from our dilemma, (3) Pray like Elisha did in verse 17 with your eyes wide shut – seeing an expectant victory! How do I know? Jackie Robinson broke baseballs color line and looked beyond his dark skin and saw rookie of the year and MVP honors; Rosa Parks looked beyond segregation and saw civil rights, Moses looked beyond slavery and saw the promised land; David looked beyond his infidelity against God, repented and saw an everlasting Kingdom. You and I can look beyond our past and see that we have become "new creatures in Christ"! Accept His grace and promise!

How about you, will you open your eyes or will they remain wide shut.
Wait on the Lord - 31 Dec 00

Isa 40:31 - But those who wait on the LORD will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
